Ophelia

Meet Ophelia...
She's a white mouse.
She's also camera shy.
In preparation for winter she cracked open an ornament and crawled in......then hung up her scarf and mittens to dry.
Soon after that she decided to pack up a bunch of vintage Christmas colored sewing notions and gum then flew the coop down to Utah where she will spend the rest of her wintery days. Maybe she was a pack rat. Hhmm???

So...I was going through my photo's cuz I clean out my computer photo folder regularly and came across this one...My "Angel Snail" from YOE!! I mention it way back here, but I forgot to post about it because I received it during the hectic month of August (at least it was for me), so here it all is...There's more bath salt, seashells, flower seeds, a bookmark, a little box sign and a lavender sachet. THANK YOU VAL for being my angel. I LOVE my little burlap snail! He's PERFECT!

August Y.o.E. Ornament Update

Right before I left town last week, I sent my package off to my swap partner, Little Messy Missy in Utah. While I was away, I received hers and got to open it yesterday! What a neat package it turned out to be...
Along with the orni, there was a skein of red eyelash yarn, a pair of knitting needles that she made with an octopus pic on the ball end, an octo-chic bookmark, an octo sun catcher and THREE Utah chocolate truffles. YUM! Just LOOK at this octo ornie....it's knitting! And all the different pics, beads and sand are layered in what I think is clear resin (or something like that). I just GOTTA get me some of this stuff and play with it. It's such a creative ornament!
Thank you Missy for the goodies AND inspiring me to try something new! Below is a pic of what I sent to her...
My two ornies, an octo magnet, a slice of pretty rock, two power bars (she's a runner) and a bag of some of my Idaho garnet gravel that my mom brought me. In her blog she mentioned that she was a rockhound. Well, that kinda stuck in my head and I ran with it. But Missy loved it, so it all worked out great!
Once again I was inspired by this Etsy item to create my octopus ornament. I didn't have a laser cutter and a sheet of acrylic to make such a feller...so I attempted shrinky dink shrink art paper first with black sharpie (left), then with black acrylic paint before shrinking (middle) then with black acrylic paint after shrinking (right), then I was frustrated and bought the colored shrink stuff (top). Yeah, the best solution to getting a black octopus is to paint him black after he shrinks. Then I gave him a clear coat to seal it.

The challenge this month was to make tentacles...so...I found a tentacle pic online here and again played with the shrink art paper to get the right size tentacle to glue rhinestones to as the suckers.
I think both turned out all right...more color would have been nice, but I think I got stuck on the whole black octo idea. Oh well...
Stay tuned for more stories of crafty fun, our travels and some new friends!

Snail mail...

For July's Year of Enchantment, the theme was "snail." Here's what I created for my swap partner...I looked up paper quilling and snails and thought I'd play with some metal again. When my January swap partner, Natalie (from down under!) created a paper quilled mermaid, my first thought was that it would be a good idea for a snail, so I stored it away for future reference...just in case. And what do ya know.....July was the snail! I found a couple of good idea generators for quilled snails here and more quilled snails here....and I found this awesome snail iron-on applique on Etsy that inspired me to try my own. Again...JUST for this swap, not for sale. As you can see (if you clicked on those links), I leaned towards the first paper quilled snail for my metal snails.
Here's the whole package...metal snail ornaments, snail iron-on appliques and some vintage lace, edgings, hankies and a baby top out of a recent stash I recieved. Even one of the laces had a snail spiral in it...funny!
My swap partner is going through a difficult time right now, therefore the hostess, Valerie at Yarni-Gras, was my "angel." My package is on it's way!!

Gnomies

Having been so busy, I realized I missed the last two I Spy Friday's...well, the last two I was out of town...I think...anyways...I'll have one for ya this Friday.

I managed to post about my Year of Enchantment gnome ornament on the SwapperSpot blog but not here...I made five or six of these little guys (after some internet inspiration) only to have ALL but TWO BREAK! Darn air dry clay....maybe I didn't use enough water to attach the pieces. I don't know... Here's how the only two that made it finished up with a bit of acrylic paint and a glaze that said it would take up to ten days to dry! Well, I only waited two until I mailed them. :) Here's the rest of what I sent......the two gnomes with three gummy army men, several teas, many perty pieces of paper (my swap partner is participating in a dress a month crafty-along here) and a yard of red and white check fabric for her Tumbleweed (here). In return, here's what I got...
VERY SIMILAR GNOMES!! There's a funny story behind these guys. I got her package before I even sent her my package. I was a few days behind because of playing with clay AND painting AND glazing...so there was some unexpected dry time that took quite a bit of time in between each task....well, I was approaching day two out of the ten days of drying for the glazing and decided that I was going to mail them anyways because they felt dry. Once I came back from the post office, I ripped open my package to find all those goodies and three gnomes and a gnome home with a baby in it and I cracked up laughing!! I title my other post Great Minds Think Alike cuz we were inspired (I'm pretty sure) by the exact same internet source!! Okay, okay....should I reveal our secret source?? FIRST...I have to say that I AM NOT reproducing this Etsy sellers creations for profit. I created the gnomes for a crafty swap giveaway. One time, that's all. IF YOU would like a cute little gnome of your own, and they're custom made, go visit HumbleBea's Etsy shop and you can find some of these adorable gnomes for yourself.

Strange Combination & Weird New Things

Last night's dinner was a pleasant surprise! I found a Betty Crocker recipe for Chicken Ranch Taco's here and me being me, altered it of course. First, I used four chicken breasts cut up (instead of a rotisserie chicken), cooked in a spoonful of oil, then I added the taco seasoning. After they were cooked through, I added the 1/2 cup ranch dressing, which makes it very runny. I also only had corn tortillas, so I heated those up in a skillet one at a time. Well they were all done, we dished up with heated (some burnt) corn tortillas, taco-ranch-chicken, topped with shredded cheddar, more ranch....and here's the strange combination....chopped parsley! I didn't have lettuce either and friend just gave me a bunch of fresh parsley, which I never buy and am not as familiar with it, so I chopped it up to add to the top of the taco. It was a very pleasant combination...and so simple and fresh tasting too! I love it when my variations turn out great!

I've found inspiration for this months YOE gnome ornament a while back...he...they...are "drying." I'm so excited to post about them when they are complete!! I used yet another new medium....heehee...I'm pretty proud of myself. Of course, that's all I can say. :)

Okay...here's the weird new thing. My dentist put on a waxy substance with fluoride on my teeth. I've never heard of fluoride being applied this way. The toothbrush doesn't brush it off, you have to wait for it to wear off. It's just weird feeling. I even googled it real quick and didn't come up with anything to explain it or how it works. Just weird I'm tellin' ya.

Taxes, Tutorials & Mobiles

I HATE doing our taxes. I don't know why, they're not hard. I'm about 95% complete, I just need my hubby to look them over one final time with me. I don't fully get all the deductions and junk. BLEAH!!! >:(

Okay, now that I've got THAT off my chest, I've been doing some surfing for bird tutorials for this months Year of Enchantment ornament theme "the songbird." I've found so many fun things to make...I just had to share them with you all...
First of all...I love, Love, LOVE this mobile!!! It's funny how you start blog surfing, and one blog talks about another blog, and another and another until you come across a blog that will have a tutorial that you just fall in love with!! I borrowed this pic from their Flickr group, but it was blogged about here at Spool Sewing and they go on to say that they actually have the pattern and tutorial for the birds here. YAAAAAYYY!! I've already made four of them that I'm going to have to photo tomorrow, as soon as I sew up their tail ends. I may make more, I don't know, I was sewing along and thinking about all the different ways to put them together for individual people. Now I have a list of people that I want to make them for.

Random thought: Maybe I should start surfing for mobiles and featuring them here....I've ALWAYS wanted to make one, why haven't I?? I need to put that on my TO-DO list.

I also came across this flower tutorial, it was originally intended for scrapbooking...naturally I'm going to make one and put it on something else. Not sure what yet though. I do have a whole corner of scrapbook stuff, I really should use it or destash it...hhmmm...more food for thought. Prior to finding the flower, I learned about the LollyChops blog. I've added it to my list of blogs to follow. YAY! She has A TON of fun things she creates and shares how to. She recently did a Week of Wallflowers, each day she did a wallhanging with three dimensional handcrafted flowers using all sorts of mediums....yarn, fabric, scrapbook paper, floral supplies, buttons, felt, you name it. My personal favorite: Orange you glad it's Monday. I LOVE ORANGE!!! This is what Lolly Chops created for orange:
LOVE IT!! I just love it when people as wonderfully creative as this share how to create their wonderful stuffs!! Yet another craft on my TO-DO list.

A week of good stuff in the mail...

I received three packages in the mail this week...woohoo!!! My first one being from Missy over at FairyChildHeirlooms for my A Fairy Went A Marketing swap...what wonderful goodies!! I sent in a pixie pouch and ten similar items (I blogged about them here.) and this is what I received...
In my new pixie pouch, I got a fairy fireplace, a fairy carpet, a fairy walking stick, a butterfly wand, a glittery lollipop, a jar of unicorn dust, a felted mushroom, a strawberry lavender sashe, a felted acorn and a lovely booklet explaining it all!! Speaking of strawberry lavender...have you ever had that combination in a jelly?? I have!! It's actually pretty good. :) Especially on a cracker...mmm-MM!
Here is my fairy enjoying her goodies. She doesn't like to smile for the camera, so she turned her head away at the last minute...naughty little fairy!
Over at Phat Fiber Sample Box I won a skein of yarn from one of her weekly drawings! YAY!! I LOVE YARN!! That was the second item I received in the mail this week. And the third one was...
My March ornament for A Year of Enchantment hosted by YarniGras!! Sherry sent me two felted mushrooms, eight paper mushrooms, some mushroom tags, a chicken with her chick and hidden Easter egg and two energy bars. So fun! I also blogged about my ornament at the SwapperSpot here...it shows more pics.

And the weather outside is NO-LONGER frightful...but has become so delightful!! The temps been in the high 50's and 60's...so nice and warm. We've been spending a few days out in the yard cleaning and searching for garnets. Garnets!! you say?? Well, check back and we'll post about it in due time. :) What a wonderful week!!

February fairy ornament story

Robin, my swap partner for the Year of Enchantment ornament swap received her package so now I can show you all. February's theme was the fairy...oh the fairy!! Now let me give you my personal history on the fairy...

I grew up with a mother who was a HUGE crafter, particularly porcelain dolls. Dolls soon led to porcelain miniatures and related miniatures, miniatures soon led to enchanting miniatures...mainly miniature fairies. What I'm getting at is that this month's theme, the fairy, was one I was too familiar with. So familiar that I could have SO EASILY created a porcelain fairy ornament since I had all the supplies at hand (or at least, at my mom's house in her stash). Well, me being me, wanted a design challenge, so I searched for something different and not so easy (or at least something I could create using my OWN stash. After all, I did join the Destash-Along 2010 challenge for myself, not for my mom.) One day while blog surfing, which I occasionally do when I'm looking for an idea, I came across this tutorial for a sarubobo doll. I thought PERFECT! The idea for the flying sarubobo would be perfect to turn into a flying fairy! So, having created a flesh colored sarubobo from muslin, I altered the "look" to be that of a fairy and this is what I created:My orange fairy prototype! It took a few days to figure out the wings, I played with several different ideas, wired ribbon, plastic printed butterfly wings, different fabric. Nothing seemed as good as the white tulle. So I played with a few different shapes. I still don't think it's my favorite idea for wings, but with a deadline, I went with them anyways. She also features a silk flower skirt, ribbon trimmed waist (or in prototype fairy's case, ric-rac trim, the rest will be ribbon), yarn hair, acorn hat, and a green beaded necklace with the center beades matching her skirt. A few more colors will be coming to my Etsy shop soon, so be on the look out. Here's the yellow fairy talking to her dragonfly friends on top of the purple and green wonky log cabin quilt block that I created for Robin. There was a GREAT online tutorial for the wonky log cabin quilt block here. I haven't created a quilt block since I was a teenager, it was a lot of fun! I've been wanting to get into quilting FOREVER! I just need a better rotary cutter and board. I was using my cutting mat from college for exacto knives and matte board (you know, for building models of your design if you're an architect or interior design major)...yeah...that's what I had, so apparently that type of cutting mat is not as self healing the way a quilting one is. :) Note to self, need new cutting matte, old one has many cuts through it now. Here's a larger pic of the quilt block and other goodies I sent to Robin:I also added some Leavenworth postcards and a package of chocolate covered red vines from the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory that's in Leavenworth. Mmmm-MM! This months challenge was to use glitter...hee-hee...here's where the glitter went...
That's some fancy pair of underpants Miss Yellow Fairy!!

Next up...my A Fairy Went A Marketing Swap creations...due in THREE DAYS!! There's a sneak peak of my prototype here in my Flickr pics. Have a great weekend!!

Leavenworth, Washington

Well, we're off to another craft retreat weekend with my mom, aunt and grandma (and of course my two boys). This is what we'll see tomorrow and all weekend, at least when we look outside our room. I wonder what I'll create this time?? Here is what I created last time.

I'll also me mailing my Year of Enchantment package from Leavenworth...after I stuff some Leavenworth goodness into it! Get ready Robin, my fairy is flying to you!

Have a great weekend!

Ornament exchange package surprises!

Yep, that's right...this was my super creative, awesome idea I came up with ALL on my own... only to research it (after I made some prototypes) and learn that they've been thought of already. :( However, the ones I found on Etsy are not two pieces sewn together like mine. There were all sorts of different kinds using real acorn caps. I like mine the best though. :)

Now that my swap partner has recieved her enchanting package of goodies, I can show you what I made for her...I just COULDN'T RESIST making a couple of cloth diaper covers for her 10 month old. My mom gave me a pattern and instructions, but I didn't like how they were put together, so I changed it. So, Natalie, if there are any issues with these diaper covers, please, PLEASE let me know. I would like to try to perfect how I make them so that I can make a WHOLE BUNCH! I also sent her a few of my favorite teas and a cute little set of notecards I just happened upon while browsing Pier 1.
I made SO MANY of the acorns, in the end I decided to send her the most "Christmas-y" ones. I think the rest will go on Etsy...I'm just debating if I should add the little holly berries and leaves to all of them or just the "Christmas-y" ones. I ended up with several shapes and sizes, I was trying to achieve the pointy tip like the real ones had (in lower left of the photo). Sewing that small was pretty easy, but to get a point like that was a little difficult. Fabric doesn't want to get that pointy when it's that small.

I also recieved Natalie's package for me!!! What perfect timing, we received them the same day! She sent a WHOLE BUNCH of goodies all wrapped in tissue paper and labeled with her recycled labels (I'm gonna do that this year, I've saved my Christmas cards)....just look at it all...There were three ribbon pinecone ornaments, eight felt leaves for decoration (my three year old can't get enough of them, he's constantly wanting to play with them), a pinecone bracelet and one HUGE bar of dark chocolate (my favorite!! and my toddlers favorite too!). We couldn't wait to try the chocolate, I think we opened it before we opened the rest of the tissue covered packages. heehee! It's got a good flavor to it, I can tell it has a different type of sugar than our American chocolates.
I LOVE the colors of the ribbon she used! The green one is AWESOME...She's very good with selecting colors I would say. :)

Isn't this bracelet cool?? I've never seen a bead so pine-coney! It's really neat!

THANK YOU NATALIE! It's all so fun and wonderful!

On its way to Australia...

Yup...my package is...here's a pic of what's inside:
You can see the ornaments on the bottom there, the smallest items in the box. I know, I know, the pics a little fuzzy, but I didn't want to give it all away until Natalie received it all. And, just so you all know, I really liked how Awtemnymf showed her teaser pic, so I did a quick search online for a free image editor and found LunaPic, which, after playing with it for 15 minutes, I came up with the pic above. And its free! So Natalie, your package is in the mail!

And for you future ornament swappers that will be sending to Australia, you can't do Delivery Confirmation. You can do 1st class Parcel and then Register your package and that will give us delivery confirmation and a tracking number that we can track. And, if you like to wrap your packages in brown paper (AKA recycled paper grocery bag) like I do, then you cannot use the typical clear plastic-y mailing tape, you have to use the "paper tape", which he retaped at the counter with. I have never heard of this, but I think it's also cuz it's going to Australia. AND...if all this information is false or not accurate, it's my post office's fault...not mine. :)

Crafting as of late...

There's only been six days into this new year and I've still manage to get my crafting in daily. Yeay!! I've started another Knitted Gnome Baby, one of several for some friends of our families, I plan on gifting them at Christmas time. I don't believe they follow my blog, so I'm not too afraid to mentioning it. I guess only time will tell if I get them all done AND on time (I've got 353 days to go). I'm also STILL working on a knitted beaded bag that I volunteered to test knit in a Ravelry group I joined. I've run into problem after problem with it, mainly because I keep dropping stitches on the double pointed needles. I'm also a slow knitter and add in the string of beads and my speed has slowed WAY down. I'm farther along than what the pic shows, I just haven't taken a recent photo of it.Other than my constant dropping stitches, it's fun to work on! And I think I beaded the beads to create a spiral pattern among the colors. Yippee!

I've joined Yarni Gras Year of Enchantment which is a year long swap of enchanting Christmas ornaments. This months swap theme is the acorn or the pinecone. I wanted to do something really unique and creative for my swap partner, Natalie (who lives in Australia...SO COOL! I've wanted to go there since the fifth grade when my best friend went for a month and we did a science project on it, which was really just an "informational" project, there was no science involved, you know, the kind where you get a big ol' display board and put up a title, information and trinkety stuff to display along with it, maybe even a flyer for people to take)...anyways, back to unique and creative...I thought about it for a good week, and I always think at night when I go to bed and I'm drifting off to sleep (why do the best ideas come right at that moment in between wake and asleep??) So I had an AHA! idea that I thought would be SO CUTE and I've already got a few prototypes going when Yarni Gras posted her tutorials post here, here and here. One of the posts gave me the idea to look up on Etsy my idea and what do you know...someone had already thought of it, BUT...it's not quite the same...MY design is different...and honestly, I think I like my design better. Well, that's all I can say about that super secret crafty bit. The suspense...what could it be?? Soon you all will see!
